Sword in a cube defining angles

How to Teach Angles a Fun Way

Angles are all around us. This lesson, which is recommended for the early elementary grades, is teaching the children to notice the angles all around them and be able to identify them. Originally, this lesson was taught in a coop setting and we had much fun with it. Even days, and in some cases weeks, after the class, the children would send us pictures of their creations! However, it is also possible to teach it in a one-family setting.

What will you need?

  1. Geoboards 5×5 straight pin grid (These geoboards can be used not only in this lesson but also for teaching various math concepts as well as for play.)
  2. Rubber bands (I highly recommend the geoboard specific rubber bands. They are firmer and last longer.)
  3. Angles in Art Lesson (see below)
  4. Angles in Art Teacher’s Instructions (see below)
  5. Angles in Art Printouts (see below)

What is a geoboard?

Geoboard was invented in the 1950s by Caleb Gattegno, an Egyptian mathematician. It is a mathematical manipulative used to explore basic concepts in plane geometry. It consists of a physical board with a number of nails. Rubber bands around are wrapped around the nails to create various shapes and designs.

What will the children learn and do?

  • They will understand 4 basic types of angles by forming these using their own arms and legs and identifying them in pictures as well as objects around them.
  • They will learn that angles are used not only in mathematics but also at play. When the children go to play miniature golf, the ball bounces of the sides of the field in precise angles in order to get to the hole.
  • They will discover that many famous artists use angles to express their ideas and identify the angles in paintings and sculptures.
  • They will make their own art using a geoboard.
